Keeping your property and your family safe.
You want your home to be the least attractive house on the street for any would-be burglars or opportunists. There are some very simple steps you can take to achieve this and to make your home more secure.
Home Security Tips and Tricks
-
Make your home secure.
Ensure all doors and windows are closed and secured, including your garage.
A burglar will be looking for the easiest point of entry into your home.
Ask yourself, ‘What is the weakest entry point into my home?’
Think like a burglar, ‘How would I rob me?’
Don’t have high value items on display or visible from the street.
Keep blinds and curtain closed, especially for rooms that have valuables, like jewellery, electronics, keys to your car.
Keep you sideways and any rear entry points neat and tidy.
Keep bushes and trees well maintained and cut back. Don’t make it easy for a burglar to hide.
If you’re going away for a long period of time, ask a neighbour to bring your bins in.
Being the only house with your bins still on the street, gives burglars a clear indication you’re not home.
Also, let your neighbours know how long you are away for, so they can keep an eye out for suspicious behaviour while you are away.
Try not to broadcast that you are going away on social media.
-
Sensor Lights are a cheap and effective deterrent to burglars.
Anyone looking to enter your home will not want to bring attention to themselves.
Any burglars creeping around your home under the cover of darkness, will be quickly deterred once the sensor light activates and lights up your home.
Install robust and well installed security doors, make it hard for someone trying to get into your home.
If you don’t already have deadlocks on your doors, get them installed. Also consider having locks installed on any vulnerable windows.

Once you have ticked off all the simple steps and improvements to the perimeter of your home, the next line of defence is technology inside your home.
Alarm Systems
A professionally installed alarm system will activate should an intruder enter your home. The sirens in your home let the intruder know that they have been detected and notification will be sent to a monitoring station who can then dispatch a licenced Patrol Officer or Police.
Even just the siren box of the alarm system is a visual deterrent enough, to discourage a burglar from attempting to enter your home.
If you do have an alarm system installed, ask yourself, when was the last time you had it tested by a professional security technician?
Like any major piece of equipment, alarm systems to be serviced to ensure they will work when you need them to!
Make sure you have your security companies’ stickers on your doors or windows, these are excellent deterrents.
CCTV
CCTV (Closed Circuit Television) is not only a great visual deterrent -who wants to be filmed snooping around- but also gives you evidence in the event of a burglary that may assist police in a conviction.
All major CCTV systems now also let you view your home remotely from a Smart Phone or PC.
